Introduction

From the moment we set foot on Playa de la Franca, we knew we were in a special place. It's one of those hidden gems, or not so hidden for those who already know it, that the eastern coast of Asturias gives us. Imagine a beach of fine golden sand, with an almost perfect shell shape, embraced by imposing cliffs that protect it from the wind and the roughest waves of the Cantabrian Sea. But what really makes it unique is its estuary: the Cabra River, a small freshwater stream, meets the sea here, creating a postcard-perfect scene and a fascinating ecosystem. This meeting of fresh and saltwater gives the beach a very particular character, ideal for those seeking a different bathing experience.

Playa de la Franca is not just a place to sunbathe; it's a natural sanctuary where scenic beauty combines with the tranquility of its waters. Its strategic location in the municipality of Ribadedeva makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the charms of easternmost Asturias and neighboring Cantabria. How to get to Playa de la Franca

Getting to Playa de la Franca is relatively easy, especially if you travel by car, which is the most comfortable and recommended option for exploring this area of Asturias. We usually take the Cantabrian Motorway (A-8) and exit 285, which takes us directly to the village of La Franca, in the council of Ribadedeva. From there, the signage to the beach is clear and guides us without problems to the parking lot.

Car access and parking

Once in La Franca, you will find a large parking lot right next to the beach. It's important to know that, during the summer months, especially in July and August, this parking lot is usually paid and can fill up quickly, particularly during the middle of the day. Our recommendation is to arrive early to secure a good spot and avoid crowds. Outside the high season, parking is free and much quieter. Access from the parking lot to the sand is very comfortable, with a ramp that facilitates access for baby strollers and people with reduced mobility, although, as we have already mentioned, total accessibility with amphibious chairs is not guaranteed.

Public transport

As for public transport, the options are more limited. There are bus lines connecting some nearby villages with Colombres, the capital of the municipality of Ribadedeva, but the frequency is not high and from there to the beach might require a taxi or a good walk. Therefore, to fully enjoy Playa de la Franca and its surroundings, we always advise using a private or rental car, which will give you the freedom to move around at your leisure and discover every corner.

The sand and the water

The experience at Playa de la Franca is largely defined by the quality of its sand and the serenity of its waters. It's a place where the sea and the river meet in a way we have rarely seen, creating an exceptionally pleasant bathing environment.

Fine golden sand

The sand here is the type we love: fine and of a golden tone that shines under the Asturian sun. It's perfect for walking barefoot, for children to build sandcastles easily, and for simply lying down to enjoy without worrying about the discomfort of coarse sand or stones. The type of ground is predominantly sandy, making it very comfortable for long beach days. At the ends, especially at low tide, you can observe some rock formations and small caves, which add a touch of adventure and are ideal for exploring with the little ones.

Calm waters and the effect of the Cabra River

The waters of Playa de la Franca are, in general, very calm and shallow, especially near the shore. This is largely due to the natural protection provided by the surrounding cliffs, which act as a barrier against the strong waves of the Cantabrian Sea. This characteristic makes it a very safe and attractive beach for families with children. However, the most distinctive feature is the influence of the Cabra River. When the tide goes out, the river carves its own course over the sand, creating small pools and freshwater areas that are a delight for children. The meeting of the river with the sea can make the water temperature slightly cooler in the estuary area, offering a refreshing contrast. We have found that the tide is a key factor here: at high tide, the sandy area is considerably reduced, while at low tide, the beach expands, revealing a vast space for walking and playing.

Services and facilities

One of the reasons why Playa de la Franca is so appreciated, especially by families, is the good provision of services and facilities it offers. This allows us to enjoy a beach day without worries, knowing we have everything we need at hand.

Essential amenities

During the bathing season, the beach has a Lifeguard post, which gives us great peace of mind, knowing that professionals are watching over everyone's safety. Furthermore, we find Showers to wash off the sand and salt after a refreshing swim, and clean, well-maintained Bathrooms/WC, a detail we always greatly appreciate. The Parking is spacious, as already mentioned, although paid in summer, which is understandable given the influx. These basic, but essential, services contribute to making the experience at the
