We love how, despite its notable length of over a kilometer, every corner of Espasa seems to have its own personality and charm, from the busier, livelier areas near the main access points to the more solitary and secluded stretches where the only sound enveloping us is the hypnotic murmur of waves gently breaking against the shore. It is a perfect balance between the accessible and the wild, a place that invites us to return again and again to keep discovering its secrets.

How to Get to Playa de Espasa

Getting to Playa de Espasa is, fortunately, a relatively simple and well-signposted process, which significantly contributes to its already great appeal. We always recommend, as a fundamental step, planning the route with some advance notice, especially if your trip coincides with the high summer season or holiday weekends, as the parking space, although ample, can fill up with surprising speed.

Road Access: A Scenic Route

The most common and efficient way to access the beach is via the modern Autovía del Cantábrico (A-8). If you are coming from the west, from cities like Oviedo or Gijón, you should take exit 346, which will lead you towards Colunga and Lastres. Furthermore, if your journey starts from the east, coming from places like Santander or Llanes, the exit to take is the same, 346, also heading towards Colunga. Once you have left the highway and joined the national road N-632, the specific signage towards Playa de Espasa becomes quite clear and explicit, guiding you without difficulty. There is a well-marked turnoff that leads directly to the beach parking area. It is a short but incredibly picturesque journey that, from its first meters, immerses you in the beauty of the Asturian landscape, preparing you for the natural majesty that awaits upon reaching the sand. The green fields, small villages, and fresh air are a perfect prelude.

Parking: Anticipation is Key

Playa de Espasa has the advantage of having a fairly large and well-organized parking area, which is, in our opinion, a great advantage on a coast where parking can be a challenge. However, and it is important to emphasize this, during the summer months, especially on weekends and holidays, it is common for the parking to become paid to regulate the influx, and it tends to fill up with surprising speed. Our personal experience tells us that the most effective strategy is to arrive early in the morning, ideally before 10:00 AM, to secure a good spot without stress and enjoy the beach when it is still quieter. There are also some areas where you can park in the surroundings, on rural roads or verges, but they usually require a slightly longer walk to the sand. Nevertheless, this additional walk through the rural environment, with its views and calm, is in itself an enjoyment and another part of the experience offered by playa Caravia.

It is a characteristic we highly value in any beach we visit, and here, in Espasa, it is more than fulfilled, exceeding even the most demanding expectations.

The sand of Espasa is mostly fine, with an incredibly soft and silky texture to the touch, and a golden tone that shines with dazzling intensity under the Asturian sun. It is a delight to walk barefoot on it, feeling every grain underfoot, and it is also perfect for the little ones to let their imagination run wild and build their most elaborate and fantastic sandcastles and figures.
