Located at the gateway to the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, but still within the municipal area of Almería city, this beach is much more than a simple stretch of coastline; it's a natural canvas where history, legend, and serenity intertwine. When we think of Almería beaches, the wild coves of Cabo de Gata or the urbanized ones of the capital often come to mind. However, Playa de Torregarcía offers us a unique blend: the tranquility of an almost virgin natural environment with the comfort of being relatively close to the city.

This extensive Almería beach invites us to disconnect, to wander aimlessly, and to feel the sea breeze. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where the horizon merges with the sea in a palette of blues, and where the sound of the waves is the only soundtrack. Its name, Torregarcía, refers us to the old watchtower that still stands, a silent witness to centuries of history and the legend of the discovery of the Virgen del Mar, patron saint of Almería, precisely on these shores. How to get to Playa de Torregarcía

Getting to Playa de Torregarcía is relatively easy, making it an attractive option for a quick getaway from the Almerían capital. We always recommend the car as the most comfortable option, given its location somewhat removed from the most frequent public transport routes.

By car

From Almería city, the journey is short and direct. We must take the N-340a road heading east, towards the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. The beach is about 10-15 kilometers from the city and is well signposted. We'll see clear signs for 'Playa de Torregarcía' or 'Torre de Torregarcía'.

• From Almería city: We follow Avenida del Mediterráneo, which becomes the AL-3202 road. We continue along this road, which will take us directly to the coast and the beach.
• Parking: Although there isn't an asphalted, organized parking lot like on urban beaches, we do find designated dirt areas right next to the beach where we can leave the car without problems, especially outside the high season. During the summer months, and particularly on weekends, we might have to search a bit more or park some distance away and walk.

By public transport

Public transport options are more limited. There isn't an urban bus line that goes directly to Playa de Torregarcía. However, some intercity lines heading towards the towns of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park could drop us off at points near the main road (AL-3202), from where we would have to walk a good stretch to the beach. For this reason, to fully enjoy Playa de Torregarcía, we highly recommend using a private vehicle.

The sand and the water

When we step onto Playa de Torregarcía, one of the first things that catches our attention is its sand. Unlike the lighter, finer sands we sometimes associate with the Mediterranean, here we find sand in darker tones, a mix of fine sand and small pebbles or gravel. This particularity gives it a wilder, more natural character, and we love it for that. It's not the ideal sand for building perfect castles, but it is for feeling the connection with the land and the sea. It's sand that warms under the sun, but at the same time, invites us to walk barefoot and feel every grain between our toes.

As for the water, it is simply delightful. The waters of Playa de Torregarcía are famous for their transparency and calmness. Being sheltered, it usually doesn't have big waves, making it ideal for a relaxing swim. The clarity of the water allows us to see the seabed at shallow depths, which is an incentive for those who enjoy a bit of snorkeling, although there isn't a great variety of marine life right at the shore. The water temperature is typical of the Andalusian Mediterranean: refreshing in spring and autumn, and deliciously warm in the summer months. We've swum in many Almería beaches, and the feeling of peace and purity offered by the water of Torregarcía is hard to match.

Services and facilities

Playa de Torregarcía is, above all, a natural and semi-virgin beach, and this is directly reflected in the availability of services and facilities. While this characteristic is precisely what attracts many of us seeking tranquility, it's important to go prepared.

• Showers and Foot Washes: Generally, we don't find permanently installed showers or foot washes. It's a beach to enjoy nature in its purest state, which means bringing our own supplies of fresh water if we want to rinse off the salt.
• Parking: As we already mentioned, there are designated dirt areas for parking the car very close to the sand. It's not an organized parking lot with barriers or payment, but a natural space that serves its purpose.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: During the summer months, a temporary chiringuito might be set up, offering drinks, ice cream, and some simple tapas. However, we shouldn't expect a wide gastronomic offer or sophisticated restaurants. The most advisable thing is to bring our own food and drink, or plan a meal in Almería city or in one of the nearby towns of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park.
