How to Get to Playa Blanca

Getting to Isla de la Juventud is already part of the adventure. The most common way is to take a ferry from Surgidero de Batabanó, in Mayabeque province, near Havana. This sea journey is an experience in itself, allowing us to appreciate the immensity of the Caribbean. Another, faster option is to fly from Havana on a domestic flight to Rafael Cabrera Mustelier (Gerona) Airport, the capital of the Island. Once on the island, Playa Blanca beach is located on the southeastern coast, a somewhat more remote area of the island, which contributes to its wild charm.

From Nueva Gerona, the capital, access to Playa Blanca may require a bit of planning. We recommend renting a car if possible, or coordinating with a local taxi. The road, although not always in perfect condition, rewards us with impressive natural landscapes. The distance is not excessive, but the nature of the terrain can make the journey somewhat slower. It's important to ask locals for the most precise directions, as signage can be scarce. What we can assure you is that every kilometer traveled will be worth it when you set foot on the sand of this paradise.

Services and Facilities

We must be honest: Playa Blanca is not a beach with vast tourist infrastructure, and that is precisely where much of its charm lies. If you are looking for large resorts, luxury restaurants, or souvenir shops, this is not the place. Here, nature is the protagonist. However, this does not mean we are completely helpless. We have found that, on occasion, we can count on some very basic and authentic services.

It is common to see some locals offering very simple services. We might find an improvised Chiringuito, where they offer us refreshing drinks, fresh coconut water, or even a dish of freshly caught fish cooked on the spot. There may also be the option to rent rustic umbrellas and sun loungers, which allows us to protect ourselves from the sun and rest comfortably. As for Parking, it is usually an informal area near the beach access, where vehicles are parked in an organized but unofficial manner. Our recommendation is to bring everything needed to spend the day: water, sunscreen, towels, snacks, and anything else we might need, to fully enjoy the experience without worries.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the right time to visit Playa Blanca is crucial to ensure an optimal experience. Like most Cuba beaches, Isla de la Juventud enjoys a tropical climate, which means we have two main seasons: the dry and the wet. We highly recommend visiting the beach during the dry season, which runs approximately from November to April.

During these months, the weather is generally sunny and dry, with pleasant temperatures and less humidity. Rainfall is scarce and the risk of hurricanes is minimal, allowing us to enjoy long, bright days on the beach without interruptions. In contrast, the wet season (May to October) brings more frequent rains, higher humidity, and the hurricane season, which can affect navigation and access to the island. Therefore, if what we are looking for is radiant sun and clear skies to fully enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Playa Blanca, planning our trip between November and April is the best option.
