How to Get to Playa Baracoa

Getting to Playa Baracoa is relatively straightforward, especially if departing from Havana. We recommend renting a car, which gives us the most flexibility to explore not only the beach but also the charming surroundings of Artemisa province. From the capital, the journey takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, taking the Vía Blanca west and then turning south onto the well-signposted roads leading to the coastal area. The roads, although not always perfect, are passable and offer us interesting views of the Cuban rural landscape.

For those who prefer not to drive, there are public transport options, although they are less direct and may require patience. Local buses, known as 'guaguas', connect Havana with Artemisa and its municipalities, but to get specifically to the beach, we will likely need to take a shared taxi or an 'almendrón' (classic Cuban car that operates as a shared taxi) from the nearest town. Private taxis are also an option, and although more expensive, they ensure a comfortable and hassle-free trip right to the shore of Playa Baracoa. Planning transportation in advance is key, especially if we visit during high season or on a weekend.

The Sand and Water

Upon setting foot on Playa Baracoa, the first thing that captivates us is the softness of its sand. It's a light-colored sand, predominantly fine, that invites us to walk barefoot and lay out a towel to enjoy the sun. The beach floor is mostly sand, making it very pleasant for children's play and for those who simply want to relax without worrying about rocks or pebbles.

As we've already mentioned, Playa Baracoa is not a beach of large resorts, and its services reflect a more local and simple, yet no less functional, style. We find a basic but sufficient offering for a pleasant day. Along the coast, we'll find several improvised chiringuitos or small establishments where we can purchase refreshing drinks, cold beers, and some snacks or light typical Cuban meals. These places are usually run by local families and offer us an excellent opportunity to interact with the people of the area and taste authentic flavors.

For those arriving by car, there is parking available, although not always structured as a large parking lot. Generally, these are designated areas near the beach where you can leave your vehicle with some security. Regarding hygiene, there are usually basic showers to rinse off the salt and sand before heading home. During the high season and on weekends, it's common to find lifeguards watching over the safety of swimmers, which gives us additional peace of mind. Furthermore, some locals offer umbrella and sunbed rentals for a modest price, allowing us to enjoy the sun and breeze in greater comfort.
