How to Get to Playa Negra (Puerto Viejo)

The most common route for most international travelers is to fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José. From there, we have several options to continue our journey to the Caribbean coast, each with its own charm and convenience. While flying into Limón International Airport (LIR) is a closer alternative, flight options are usually more limited and often involve a layover in San José.

This is the most economical option and allows us to enjoy the scenery. We will take a direct bus from the San José bus terminal (Terminal Caribeños) bound for Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The journey takes approximately 4.5 to 5 hours, depending on traffic and stops. The buses are comfortable and offer us an authentic local experience. It is advisable to buy tickets in advance, especially during high season or on weekends.

#### By Shuttle or Private Transport

For those of us seeking greater comfort and speed, shared shuttle services or private transport are an excellent choice. Several tourist companies offer this door-to-door service, picking us up at the airport or our hotel in San José and dropping us off directly at our accommodation in Puerto Viejo. The trip takes about 4 hours and is usually more direct. If we are traveling in a group, a private taxi or van can be competitively priced and gives us the flexibility to stop wherever we want.

#### Renting a Car

Renting a car gives us the freedom to explore at our own pace and discover hidden corners. The route from San José to Puerto Viejo takes us along Route 32, which crosses Braulio Carrillo National Park, offering us spectacular views of the rainforest. It is important to consider that this road can be winding and is sometimes subject to fog or rain, so it is crucial to drive with caution. Once we reach Limón, we continue south on Route 36 until we reach Puerto Viejo. The road to Playa Negra is paved and in good condition, facilitating access to most accommodations in the area. We are just a few minutes by car or bicycle from the center of Puerto Viejo.

If we manage to fly directly to Limón, the journey to Puerto Viejo is much shorter, approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes by car or taxi. There are also local buses connecting Limón with Puerto Viejo, although they may be less frequent.
