Playa Manzanillo, located in the province of Limón, Costa Rica, is one of those magical places. It is a hidden gem at the southern tip of the Costa Rican Caribbean, where the rainforest meets the turquoise sea, creating a postcard-perfect landscape that is etched in memory.

Upon arrival, we are greeted by a relaxed and bohemian atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of more crowded destinations. Here, time seems to slow down, inviting us to disconnect and enjoy the simplicity of Caribbean life. The proximity to the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge adds an extra layer of charm, offering us the opportunity to explore rich and diverse ecosystems, both terrestrial and marine.

How to Get to Playa Manzanillo

Getting to Playa Manzanillo is part of the adventure and gradually immerses us in the Caribbean atmosphere. If we are coming from San José, the capital, the car journey takes approximately 4-5 hours. The most common route is to take Route 32, a scenic highway that crosses Braulio Carrillo National Park, offering spectacular views of the rainforest, although it can sometimes be a bit winding and foggy. Once we reach Limón, we continue south on Route 36, passing through the vibrant towns of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.

From Puerto Viejo, the journey to Manzanillo is an additional 12 kilometers. This last part of the road is particularly picturesque, running along the coast and passing through small villages and palm plantations. The road is paved and in good condition for most of the year, although it is always advisable to drive with caution and enjoy the scenery. We can also opt for public transport; there are direct buses from San José to Puerto Viejo, and from there, local buses or taxis will take us directly to Playa Manzanillo. For those who prefer comfort, there are shuttle services and private taxis available, which pick us up directly at the airport or at our hotel in San José.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa Manzanillo, it is impossible not to highlight the beauty of its sand and the clarity of its waters. The sand here is a pale golden hue, incredibly fine and soft to the touch, inviting us to walk barefoot and feel the warmth under our feet. It stretches along the coast, occasionally dotted with palm trees that offer natural shade and coconut palms that add that exotic touch so characteristic of the Caribbean.

The waters of the Caribbean Sea in Manzanillo are simply spectacular. Their color ranges from a bright turquoise near the shore to a deeper blue offshore, and their clarity is such that we can easily see the seabed. The waters are generally very calm, protected by the shape of the bay and the nearby coral reefs, making it an ideal place for swimming, especially for children. The water temperature is warm and pleasant year-round, allowing us to enjoy long swims without feeling cold. It is a true pleasure to immerse ourselves in this oasis of calm and freshness, occasionally observing a curious fish or a starfish that has decided to approach the shore.

Services and Facilities

Despite its relaxed atmosphere and pristine nature, Playa Manzanillo offers a range of essential services that contribute to a comfortable and pleasant stay. In the small village of Manzanillo, right next to the beach, we find several Restaurants and local 'sodas' where we can taste delicious Caribbean cuisine at very reasonable prices. These establishments usually also offer Bathrooms/WC for customers.

For those arriving by car, there are Parking options, although they are usually informal areas managed by locals or small parking lots belonging to the restaurants. Let's not expect large parking infrastructures, but we will always find a safe place to leave our vehicle. Furthermore, given the marine richness of the area, several local operators offer Equipment Rental for activities like snorkeling and kayaking, allowing us to explore the nearby reef and mangroves. It is important to consider that, due to its more natural and protected character, we will not find services like official lifeguards on the beach, public showers right on the sand, or mass rentals of umbrellas and sunbeds. The philosophy here is to enjoy nature in its purest state, so we recommend bringing our own towels and sunscreen.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the best time to visit Playa Manzanillo will allow us to fully enjoy everything this paradise has to offer. Generally, the Costa Rican Caribbean has a slightly different weather pattern than the Pacific. We consider the most favorable months for a visit to be from December to April and from September to October.

During the months of December to April, the weather is usually drier and sunnier, with less rain and clear skies, which is ideal for enjoying the beach, snorkeling, and excursions in the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge. The waters are especially calm and clear during this time, perfect for observing marine life. However, it is also the high season, so we can expect more tourists and slightly higher prices.
