This hidden gem, located in the province of Limón, offers us a different beach experience, far from the hustle and bustle and crowds, inviting us to connect with the essence of Costa Rica. We've had the pleasure of exploring it and want to share with you every detail of what makes Playa Chiquita such a special place.

Playa Chiquita doesn't boast large hotels or overwhelming tourist infrastructure. In fact, its charm lies precisely in its simplicity and respect for its natural surroundings. Here, palm trees lean over the golden sand, the Caribbean Sea gifts us breathtaking shades of blue and green, and the rainforest stretches almost to the shoreline. It's a place where we can spend hours simply listening to the symphony of nature or immersing ourselves in its warm, calm waters. For us, it's the epitome of the Caribbean 'Pura Vida', a haven of peace perfect for disconnecting and recharging.

How to Get to Playa Chiquita

Getting to Playa Chiquita is part of the adventure and, honestly, it's quite simple once you're in the Limón area of Costa Rica. The beach is located on the southern Caribbean coast, between the popular towns of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and Manzanillo.

From San José

If you're coming from the capital, San José, you have several options:

• By car: The most common route is Route 32 to Limón city (about 3.5 to 4 hours), and then Route 36 south (an additional 1.5 hours) passing through Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. The journey is scenic.
• By bus: Several companies offer direct services from San José (Terminal del Caribe) to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, taking 4.5 to 5 hours. From Puerto Viejo, you can take a taxi, local bus, or rent a bicycle for the 5 kilometers to Playa Chiquita.
• By plane: Short flights from San José (SJO) to Limón airport (LIO), and then ground transportation to the beach.

From Puerto Viejo or Manzanillo

Once in the area, Playa Chiquita is very accessible:

• By bicycle: It's the most popular and charming way to get around, with many rentals in Puerto Viejo. The route is flat and runs along the coast.
• By local bus: They run regularly between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo, with stops near the beach access points.
• By taxi: Always available in Puerto Viejo for a quick trip.
• By car: Driving is easy, with informal parking along the main road.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa Chiquita, the image that comes to mind is that of a perfect Caribbean postcard. Its sand is a soft golden, almost toasted color, with a fine texture that invites you to walk barefoot and feel every grain under your feet. It's clean and pleasant sand, ideal for spreading out a towel and enjoying the sun without worries. Softness is the star, making it very comfortable for all ages.

But if the sand is a delight, the water is simply magical. The waters of Playa Chiquita are, for the most part, calm and crystal clear, with shades ranging from light turquoise to deep blue. This calm is partly due to the formation of small coves and inlets that protect it from stronger currents, creating perfect natural pools for swimming and splashing. The water temperature is warm year-round, a pleasure to immerse yourself in and feel the softness of the Caribbean Sea.

The clarity of the water also makes it an excellent place for snorkeling, especially in areas where there are some rock formations or nearby reefs. Although it's not a massive reef, marine life is abundant and colorful. We've enjoyed observing small tropical fish and starfish. The combination of fine sand and serene waters makes Playa Chiquita an idyllic destination for relaxation and an authentic connection with the sea.

Services and Facilities

As we've already mentioned, Playa Chiquita is known for its natural and less developed atmosphere, which contributes to its wild charm. This means you won't find the same service infrastructure as in more urbanized beaches. The beauty of Playa Chiquita lies in its simplicity, but that doesn't mean we're completely helpless.

Available services (nearby or informal):

• Parking: Along the main road (Route 36), there are several points where you can park your car informally, usually under the shade of trees. They are not supervised parking lots, but they are convenient for accessing the trails leading to the beach.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: There are no large structures directly on the sand, but a few meters away or along the road, you'll find small 'sodas' (local restaurants) and chiringuitos. They offer delicious and fresh Caribbean food. In Puerto Viejo, the gastronomic offer is wider.
• Bathrooms/Toilets: Generally, bathrooms are not available directly on the beach. However, the nearby chiringuitos and sodas usually have sanitary facilities you can use if you purchase something.
• Equipment Rental: Although there are no shops directly on the beach, in Puerto Viejo or some nearby accommodations you can find options to rent snorkeling gear or kayaks.
