How to Get to Playa Nosara

Getting to Playa Nosara is part of the adventure, and although its roads can be a bit challenging, the final destination more than makes up for it. We have experienced several ways to get there, and each has its charm and particularities.

International Flights

Most international travelers arrive in Costa Rica through two main airports:

• Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José: This is the largest airport, but it's about 5-6 hours by car from Nosara. From here, you can take a domestic flight, a shuttle, or rent a car.
• Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Guanacaste: This is the most convenient airport for Nosara, about 2.5-3 hours by car. Many airlines have direct flights to Liberia, making access to the Costa Rica beaches of the region easier.

Domestic Flights

For us, the fastest and most scenic option is a domestic flight. Sansa Airlines operates short, regular flights from San José (SJO) and Liberia (LIR) directly to the small landing strip in Nosara. It's a unique experience, offering spectacular views of the coast and jungle. However, luggage is limited, so plan ahead.

Car Rental

If you prefer the freedom to explore at your own pace, renting a car is an excellent option. We always recommend a 4x4 vehicle, especially if you're traveling during the rainy season (May to November) or if you plan to explore the surrounding areas. The roads leading to Nosara, although improved, are still mostly gravel and dirt, with some sections that can be tricky. It's important to drive with caution and patience.

Shuttles and Taxis

There are numerous shared and private shuttle services operating from San José and Liberia to Nosara. This is a comfortable and stress-free option, ideal if you don't want to worry about driving. Shuttles are usually punctual and drivers are familiar with the roads. Private taxis are also available, offering greater flexibility, though at a higher cost.

Public Bus

For travelers on a tighter budget, the public bus is a viable alternative. Although it requires more time and several connections, it's an economical way to get to Nosara. From San José, you can take a bus to Nicoya and then another to Nosara. It's a deeper immersion into the local culture, if you have the time and appetite for adventure.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa Nosara, we refer to a set of interconnected beaches that share similar characteristics, but each with its own charm. The sand here is mostly a light grayish tone, soft to the touch but firm enough for long sunset walks or running along the shore. It's sand that invites you to take off your shoes and feel every step, one of the reasons we love the Costa Rica beaches.

Nosara is known for being an extensive and open beach, which makes it feel less crowded even in high season. The mouth of the Nosara River marks a key point, where the mangrove ecosystem meets the ocean, creating a dynamic landscape vital for wildlife. Here you won't find classic palm trees right down to the water along its entire length, but rather a mix of coastal vegetation that offers natural shade and a refuge for local fauna.

The water at Playa Nosara is warm and welcoming year-round, with temperatures around 26-29°C (79-84°F). This makes it perfect for swimming, surfing, or simply splashing around. However, it's essential to be aware of the tides and currents, especially if you're not familiar with Pacific conditions. The waves are consistent, which has cemented Nosara's reputation as one of the world's best surfing destinations. The tides can drastically change the appearance of the beach, revealing natural pools at low tide or covering wide areas at high tide.

Marine Flora and Fauna

The natural richness of Nosara extends underwater and in its surroundings. Although it's not a primary destination for snorkeling or diving due to visibility that can be affected by waves and sediment, its waters and mangroves are home to incredible diversity. You can spot sea turtles (especially in nearby Ostional), various fish species, and with luck, dolphins or even whales in season.
