How to get to Playa del Coco

Getting to Playa del Coco is surprisingly easy, which greatly contributes to its popularity. We always recommend flying into Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, which is only about 25-30 minutes away by car. This airport receives flights from several cities in North America and Europe, making access very easy.

• Car rental: This is our preferred option if you plan to explore the surroundings of Playa del Coco and other Guanacaste beaches. The road is in excellent condition and the journey is short and direct.
• Taxis and private transportation services: Available right outside the terminal. They are comfortable and efficient, although a bit more expensive.
• Shared shuttles: A good option if you're traveling alone or as a couple and want to save a bit. Book in advance.
• Public bus: This is the most economical option. You would need to take a bus from the airport to Liberia and then another bus to Playa del Coco. It's a viable option for budget travelers with plenty of time.

The sand and water

The Playa del Coco beach is distinguished by its darker-toned sand, a common feature in many Guanacaste beaches due to their volcanic origin. Don't expect fine white sands like those in the Caribbean; here the sand is coarse-grained and grayish, giving it a rustic and authentic charm. We love the feeling underfoot and the way it contrasts with the turquoise blue of the ocean.

As for the water, it is generally very calm and warm, ideal for swimming and for children to play safely. Being protected within the Gulf of Papagayo, the waves are gentle and the current is minimal. This makes it a perfect place for those seeking a relaxing swim or to start water sports like paddleboarding or kayaking. The underwater visibility, although not always crystal clear like in some reefs, is sufficient to enjoy a good dip and sometimes even to see some fish near the shore.

Services and facilities

One of the biggest advantages of Playa del Coco is the incredible amount of services and facilities it offers. It's one of the Costa Rica beaches where you really won't lack for anything. The town, which stretches along the coast, is fully equipped to serve visitors.

• Restaurants and chiringuitos: From sodas (local typical food restaurants) to high-end international cuisine restaurants, especially specializing in fresh seafood. There are options for all tastes and budgets.
• Shops and supermarkets: Several large supermarkets where you can stock up on everything you need, as well as souvenir shops, beachwear and handicrafts.
• Banks and ATMs: You won't have any problems accessing your money.
• Pharmacies and medical clinics: For any minor health needs.
• Tours and equipment rental: Numerous agencies offer diving, snorkeling, sport fishing, boat tours, kayak, paddleboard and jet ski rentals.
• Public showers and restrooms: Although not along the entire length of the beach, there are points where you can find these facilities, especially near commercial establishments.
• Parking: There are parking areas available, both paid and free on some side streets.
• Lifeguards: During the high season, there is usually a lifeguard presence, increasing safety for bathers.
• Umbrellas and sun loungers: Many establishments facing the beach offer rentals of these items, or you can bring your own.

Best time to visit

For us, choosing the best time to visit Playa del Coco depends a lot on your preferences, but generally, the dry season is the most popular.

Dry Season (December to April)

• Weather: Sunny and hot days, with very little rain. It's the ideal time to enjoy the beach and outdoor activities without interruptions.
• Advantages: Clear skies, low humidity, perfect conditions for diving and snorkeling, and the chance to see more wildlife due to water scarcity in other areas.
• Disadvantages: It's the high season, which means more tourists, higher prices for accommodation and tours, and the need to book well in advance.
