How to Get to Playa Avellanas

The most common way to access this jewel of Guanacaste is through the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, which is approximately an hour and twenty minutes away by car. From there, the most direct route involves taking Highway 21 heading south and then turning west towards Tamarindo, finally following the signs to Avellanas.

If you are already in Tamarindo, the distance is much shorter, about twenty or thirty minutes by car. From Tamarindo, the road to Playa Avellanas is relatively straightforward, although a significant portion of the road is unpaved. This means a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended, especially during the rainy season (from May to November), when the roads can become muddy and full of potholes. However, even in the dry season, a car with higher ground clearance will provide a more comfortable and safer driving experience. Don't worry about getting lost; the signs are clear and the presence of other vehicles and surfers will confirm you're on the right path to this spectacular Guanacaste beach.

In addition to car rentals, there are other options to get there. Taxis are an alternative, although they can be expensive. There are also private shuttle services that can be booked from the airport or from Tamarindo, offering you comfort and a worry-free transfer directly to your accommodation or the beach. For the more adventurous, bicycles can be an option from Tamarindo, although the heat and road conditions can make it a demanding journey.
