How to get to Playa de Potam

Getting to Playa de Potam is part of the adventure and, at the same time, surprisingly simple. We always recommend the car option, whether your own or a rental, as it gives you the freedom to explore the surroundings at your own pace. From Vlora, the journey is approximately 70 kilometers to the south, following the impressive coastal road SH8, which winds through the Llogara National Park and offers panoramic views that will take your breath away. It's a trip that, in itself, is already a tourist attraction and one of the most memorable experiences of the Albanian Riviera.

By car

If you're coming from Tirana, the trip is longer, about 4-5 hours, but the road is in good condition. Once you get close to Himarë, you'll find clear signage towards Potam. The beach has parking areas that, although they can fill up in high season, are usually sufficient for the influx of visitors. Driving along the coast is a delight; every curve reveals a new landscape, from steep mountains to hidden coves. It's the ideal way to discover not only Playa de Potam but also other Vlora beaches and those of the region.

Public transport

For those who prefer not to drive, there are options of buses and 'furgonetas' (local minibuses) that connect Vlora and other main cities with Himarë. Once in Himarë, Playa de Potam is a short distance away, about a 15-20 minute walk from the city center. It's also possible to take a local taxi for greater comfort. Although it's a more economical option, the flexibility of a car is undeniable to make the most of the charm of this part of Albania.

The sand and water

What distinguishes Playa de Potam from many other Albania beaches is its particular composition. Here you won't find fine sand, but a bed of soft, round white pebbles. We, at first, were surprised, but we quickly realized that this characteristic is part of its charm. The pebbles don't stick to the skin like sand, and walking on them, especially with appropriate water footwear, is a pleasant experience. Furthermore, they contribute to the incredible clarity of the water.

The water at Playa de Potam is, simply, spectacular. Its transparency is such that you can see the seabed even at several meters depth. The color varies from an intense blue in the deeper areas to an emerald turquoise near the shore, constantly inviting you for a refreshing swim. The entry into the sea is generally gentle, although there may be a small initial slope due to the pebbles. It's an idyllic place for swimming, snorkeling, and simply enjoying the purity of the marine nature. The cleanliness of the water is one of the reasons why this Vlora beach is so appreciated.

There are abundant options to rent sun umbrellas and sunbeds, which is essential for protection from the Albanian sun during the midday hours. Furthermore, the presence of showers is a big plus, allowing us to wash off the salt and pebbles before leaving. There are also Bathrooms/WCs available, which is always an important convenience.

Gastronomic offer

The beach has several chiringuitos and small restaurants that serve delicious local dishes, from fresh seafood to traditional Albanian cuisine. It's the perfect place to enjoy a cold drink or a light lunch with sea views. Most offer a relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices. The presence of lifeguards during the high season gives us additional peace of mind, especially if we're traveling with children. The parking is accessible, although in the months of July and August, we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot.
