How to Get to Playa de Piqeras

Getting to Playa de Piqeras is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it's quite straightforward if we travel by car. From the city of Vlora, the route takes us south on the SH8, a coastal road that winds through spectacular landscapes, offering us panoramic views of the sea and mountains. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and any stops we make to admire the surroundings. It's a trip that, in itself, is already an experience.

By Car

For us, the most comfortable and flexible option is always the car. It allows us to explore at our own pace and stop at any point of interest that catches our attention. From Vlora, we take the SH8 towards Saranda. We will pass through Orikum and Llogara Pass, although Piqeras is before reaching the higher sections of the pass. The signage is adequate, and once we approach the village of Piqeras, we will find signs for the beach. There are parking areas, often managed by local chiringuitos or small businesses, where we can leave our vehicle for a modest fee. The road to the beach itself can be a bit narrow and winding in the last stretches, but the effort is worth it.

Public Transport

While there is no direct bus service that drops us right on the sand of Playa de Piqeras, we can take a bus from Vlora or Saranda to the village of Piqeras. From the village, the beach is within walking distance, although perhaps a bit long for some, especially under the summer sun (approximately 20-30 minutes walking downhill). An alternative could be to negotiate a local taxi from the village to the beach, which is a viable option if we prefer not to walk or don't have a car. However, for maximum comfort and freedom, we insist that the car is the best option for this area of Vlora beaches.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive features of Playa de Piqeras is its composition. Unlike the fine sandy beaches found in other parts of the world, here we find a fascinating mix of coarse sand and small pebbles. This combination gives it a unique texture, which feels very pleasant underfoot, and contributes to the astonishing clarity of its waters. The pebbles act as a natural filter, preventing the sand from being stirred up and keeping the waters pristine and transparent, inviting us to dive in from the first moment.

The Beach Composition

When we reach the shore, we notice the presence of small sea-polished pebbles, interspersed with areas of coarser sand. This particularity makes the beach less prone to sand sticking to our clothes or towels, which is an advantage for many. It's advisable to bring water shoes or aqua sandals, especially for children or those with more sensitive feet, as the pebbles can be a bit rough when walking barefoot. However, this characteristic is precisely what gives it its rustic and natural charm, highly appreciated by those seeking an authentic experience on the beaches of Albania.

The Water Quality

But if there's something that truly captivates us about Playa de Piqeras, it's the quality of its water. Of an intense turquoise color that blends with the deep blue of the Ionian, it's incredibly clean and transparent. We can see the seabed with astonishing clarity, even at several meters depth, making it a paradise for snorkeling. The water temperature is generally pleasant during the summer months, ideal for cooling off and swimming for hours. The absence of strong currents and its relative calm make it perfect for a relaxing and safe swim, for both adults and children. It is, without a doubt, one of the main reasons why we highly recommend this Vlora beach.
