How to Get to Playa de Drymades

Getting to Playa de Drymades is part of the adventure and, although it requires some planning, the journey is scenic and rewarding. The beach is located in the Vlora district, south of the city of Vlora and north of Himara, on the famous SH8 highway that winds along the Albanian Riviera.

From Vlora

If we're coming from the city of Vlora, the journey is approximately 50-60 kilometers and can take between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. The route takes us through the Llogara Pass, an experience in itself with spectacular panoramic views that will force us to stop for some photos. We highly recommend renting a car to have the freedom to explore at our own pace and enjoy unexpected stops.

From Saranda or Himara

If our starting point is Saranda, further south, the journey will be longer, about 3-4 hours. From Himara, however, the trip is much shorter, about 20-30 minutes. In both cases, we'll follow the SH8, a well-maintained road offering unforgettable coastal landscapes. There are also bus or 'furgon' (minibus) options connecting the main cities with Drymades, although with less flexible schedules.

Parking

Once in Drymades, finding parking is usually relatively easy, especially if we visit outside the peak season. There are several parking areas, both free and paid, managed by local restaurants and accommodations. We always recommend arriving early to secure a good spot, especially in July and August.

The Sand and Water

What truly makes Playa de Drymades unique is its distinctive composition. Here, we won't find just fine sand, but a fascinating mix of sand and small pebbles, which we classify as 'mixed'. This particular combination gives the coastline a special character and contributes to the astonishing clarity of its waters. The pebbles act as a natural filter, keeping the sea incredibly transparent and allowing us to see the bottom even several meters deep.

The waters of the Ionian Sea at Drymades are simply spectacular: an intense turquoise color that fades into a deep blue, with an ideal temperature for swimming during the summer months. They are generally calm and shallow near the shore, making them perfect for families with children. Diving into them is a delight, a feeling of freshness and purity that completely recharges us. The texture of the ground under our feet, a soft caress of sand and the gentle pressure of the pebbles, is a tactile experience we don't easily forget.

• Lifeguards: During the high season, the beach has lifeguard services, increasing safety for all swimmers, especially for families.
• Parking: As mentioned before, there are several parking options, some free and others paid, managed by local businesses.

Leisure and Dining Options

• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Drymades is famous for its lively gastronomic offerings. We'll find numerous 'chiringuitos' serving refreshing drinks and snacks, as well as restaurants offering delicious local and international cuisine, with a special emphasis on fresh fish and seafood.
• Equipment Rental: For water sports enthusiasts, there are rental points for kayaks, paddle surf (SUP) boards, and sometimes snorkeling equipment. It's an excellent way to explore the coast from another perspective.

These are the warmest and busiest months. The sun shines brightly, water temperatures are perfect, and the atmosphere is vibrant and festive.
