How to Get to Playa de Karpen

Getting to Playa de Karpen is relatively straightforward, though we recommend using your own or a rental vehicle for greater comfort and flexibility. This charming beach is located approximately 40-50 kilometers west of Tirana, and about 20-25 kilometers south of Durrës, Albania's second-largest city and a major port. The most common route from Tirana involves taking the SH2 highway towards Durrës and then turning south onto secondary roads leading to the coast. Signage is decent, but it's always useful to have a GPS.

From Durrës, the journey is shorter and more direct, following the coastline south. The drive from Tirana usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour, depending on traffic. We note that direct public transport to the Tirana beach of Karpen is limited, so a taxi or private car are the most practical options. Once nearby, you'll see signs pointing to Plazhi i Karpenit, the local name for the beach. Parking, though often informal, is usually available nearby, making access to the sand easy.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Karpen welcomes us with a charming mix of sand and small pebbles. The 'mixed sand' is one of its distinctive features, offering an interesting texture underfoot that ranges from stretches of finer, golden sand to areas with small stones polished by the sea. This combination gives it a natural and somewhat wild character, setting it apart from purely fine-sand beaches. It's a comfortable surface for lying down, and the pebbles add a touch of authenticity to the landscape.

• Chiringuitos: There's no shortage of small chiringuitos and beach bars where we can enjoy refreshing drinks, ice cream, and some snacks. They're perfect for escaping the heat and replenishing energy with sea views.
• Parking: Although not always a formal, paved parking lot, there are designated or tolerated areas where we can park our vehicle without major issues, generally near the beach access.
• Showers: To wash off the salt and sand after a swim, the beach has public showers, a service much appreciated by all bathers.
• Lifeguard service: During the peak summer season, the beach usually has a lifeguard service, which adds a layer of safety, especially for families with children. We always recommend paying attention to the flags and following the lifeguards' instructions.
• Restrooms/WC: The chiringuitos and some public areas have restrooms, ensuring we have access to these basic facilities during our stay. It's important to remember to keep them clean and respectful.
